Federated Department Stores, which owns Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, laid out a $17 billion plan to acquire May Department Stores. The deal doubles the size of Federated, and will create a mammoth retailer with annual sales of $30 billion. Federated hopes the merger will help it compete with speciality shops, such as Gap, and large general retailers.

Saajid Badat was convicted in Britain of plotting to blow up an airliner using a shoe bomb, a device almost identical to the one used by Richard Reid, the British shoe-bomber caught trying to blow up a plane en route to the United States in December 2001.

Biogen Idec and Elan, two biotech companies, saw their share prices collapse (by 40% and 70% respectively) after withdrawing Tysabri, a drug that treats multiple sclerosis. Tysabri has been associated with two cases (including one death) of a rare and devastating disease of
the central nervous system.

George Bush’s grand tour of Europe took in Brussels, Mainz, in Germany, and Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital. Besides visiting the European Union and NATO headquarters, he dined with France’s Jacques Chirac, breakfasted with Britain’s Tony Blair, and held meetings with Germany’s Gerhard Schröder and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Most Europeans were pleased by his renewed emphasis on the value and importance of the transatlantic relationship.

eゼミ:Novartis社のHexal社買収(BTW第01回)

Novartis, a Swiss pharmaceuticals group, said it would buy Hexal, a German drugs company, in a merger that will see Novartis become the world’s biggest maker of generic drugs (through its Sandoz division). The deal, worth $8.3 billion in total, includes provisions for Novartis eventually to take control of Eon Laboratories, Hexel’s American affiliate.
