Trace (Patricia Cornwell)
「検死官」シリーズで日本でも大人気のパトリシアコーンウェルの最新刊です。前作の”Blow Fly”がガッカリだったし、もうシリーズ終わりかと思っていたんですが、あのドクターケイスカーペッタさん登場です。スカーペッタシリーズはもう、１３冊目、とかじゃないかしら。乱暴だけど心優しいマリーノも健在。かなり期待してしまいます。でもチャプター８コほど読んで思い出したんですが、そういえばパトリシアさん、もしかしてサイコパス？と思ってしまうほどに検死の描写がおどろおどろしかったんだった。そして犯人の行動の描写も。あとルーシーの彼女の描写も。ちょっと本選ぶの失敗したかしら。邦題は「痕跡」だそうです。上下あって、12/25/2004発売だとか。

追記（12/7/2004）：読み終わりました。感想は下に続きます。
はっきり言って読後感はあんまりよろしくないです。ケイスカーペッタシリーズ、というノリだけが救い。ドキドキ感もないし、マリーノが味わうあの経験は、女の私が読んだだけで痛いのに、男性には痛すぎて気を失ってしまうんじゃないかと思うほどです。そしていつもながら、ルーシーの彼女がひどい。
でもまぁ、ボリュームはあったし、途中であきたけれど最後の1/3くらいは一気読みできました。今回ん、と思ってチェックをいれたのは76ページだけ。
When he first met her she was ten years old. Ten. A pudgy little runt with glasses and an obnoxious attitude. They hated each other, then things changed and she hero-worshipped him, and then they became friends, and then things changed again. Somewhere along the line, he should have put a stop to progress, to all the changing, because about ten years ago things were just right and he felt good teaching her to drive his truck and ride a motorcyccle, how to shoot, how to drink beer, how to tell if someone’s lying, the important things in life. Bacck then he wasn’t afraid of her. Maybe fear isn’t the right word to describe what he feels, but she has power in life and he doesn’t, and half the time when he gets off the phone after talking to her, he feels down in the dumps and bad about himself. Lucy can do whatever she likes and still have money and order people around, and he can’t. Not even when he was a sworn police officer could he flaunt power the way she does. But he’s not afraid of her, he tells himself. Hell no, he’s not.
これはマリーノの心の中ですが、これを読みながら、そうだ、だいたいこのスカーペッタシリーズが面白かったのはルーシーがどんどん成長したからだ、と思い出しました。今やなんだかすっかり混乱してしまった強がりな（そして強い）ノンヘテロセクシャルな女性、と言った感じ。きっとこういう成長するキャラクターがいたらもっと面白いだろうに、と残念に思いました。そしてTech Savvy=Geek but Coolというのが、もう今は当たり前というか、普通といった状況になってしまった社会の成長度もあるのでしょう。
ベントンの魅力もあんまりなかったのも残念。もっと読み終わったあとにあー面白かった！と思えるミステリが読みたいです。
