とりあえず、Defense CopyになるThesisは書き上げました。長かった。私はもともと朝早く起きて、昼間の間に勉強し、夜はのんびりするのが好きなタイプなのですが、今回ばかりはそんなことも言ってられず、昨日は実は夜中の４時までやってました。夜中に家に帰ったのでValとJoeを起こしてしまっただろうなぁとちょっと申し訳ない気もしましたが、でも、アドバイザーなので分かってくれたことでしょう。今日くらい、ちょっと頑張らせてね、という感じでした。
いま私のThesisはちんまりとKinko’sのハコに入っています。なんかしみじみしちゃう。でも、これもまた、これでもか！という感じで書き直す運命にあります。というのも、Defenseのあと、５日以内に、Final Copyを提出すること、というふうに決まっていて、「え？その５日間ってなに？？」と思っていたら、「Thesisを書き直す期間」だったりするのでした。まだやるのね。。。という感じ。で、私のDefenseは5/2なので、5 working daysを足すと5/9ということになるのでその日くらいにすべてのことから解放されることになるのでしょう。
ところでハッピーなことがまた今日起きました。次のセメスター、Fall 2001のアシスタンシップをまた、いただけました。嬉しいです。実は私はグラントを申請していて、その中の予算の中に、私の給料や、授業料その他いろんなことを入れていたので、もしそのグラントがもらえれば、私はResearch Assistant (RA) という立場になれるので、あまりお金のことは心配しなくていいのですが、なんとそのグラントの結果が正式に分かるのは10月だというんですね。ということはもうすでにセメスター（学期）は始まっている、ということは私は学部のアシスタンシップを申し込まなくてはいけない、ということになり、一応願書を出していたんです。期日ギリギリに提出したので、アシスタンシップがもらえるかどうかちょっと分からなかったのですが、今日無事にもらえることが分かり、ほっとしています。だってもしもらえなかったら私はPh.D.どころか日本に帰ってせっせとはたらかなくてはいけない運命にあるから。授業料がけして払えない、というのが理由です。でももらえて良かった。これで生活できそうです。
で、お約束みたいになってますがその手紙をここに書いておきます。もういちど書きますが、これは将来「こんなことがあったわねぇ」とひとりで喜ぶタメのものなので、家族以外の皆さんは（あと興味がある方以外の方は）スーっと飛ばしてくださいませ。
Congratulations! I am pleased to be able to offer you a State Teaching Assistanship in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition contingent upon successfully passing your Masters defense. Your appointment is effective from August 16, 2001 through May 15, 2002 with a total salary of $1,236.00 per month. Contingent upon satisfactory grade point average and teaching/research performance, the assistanship may be renewed yearly, however, this is not guaranteed. You have been assigned to a teaching assistanship in FSHN 130, Nutrition For Living. Please contact the instructor, SShelly mcGuire, concerning TA responsibilities and the job description particular to your class assignments. You also should contact your advisor(s), Val Hillers or Miriam Edlefsen, for specific graduate student responsibilities. There will be a mandatory orientation meeting at the beginning of the fall semester (date/time announced later).
“This apointment is conditional, subject to maintenance of a 3.00 cumulative GPA and continued regular enrollment in the WSU Graduate School with payment by the student of the required general tuition and fees. It is required that you live within the State of Washington to be eligible through a cooperative program to qualify for a tuition waiver. See the attachment regarding assistanship and waiver information. Graduate students may not carry an “incomplete” longer than one semester or summer session while on appointment. Re-appointment will not be done if the above conditions are not met. Graduate assistants, who qualify, also receive a health insurance fringe benefit. (Graduate School Doc. #12)”
Since your appointment begins August 16, 2001 and ends May 15, 2002, your work obligation of 20 hours per week begins and ends on these same dates. These dates do not coincide with the beginning and end of school (Aug. 27 and May 10). Because you are being paid, you are required to be here working, including school holidays and breaks. You can arrange to take leave during school breaks with you advisor(s) and/or instructor of the course, in advance.
Salary for 1 semester:
Enrolled for a Masters degree=5,240.25
Enrolled for Ph. D. degree=5,562.00
Benefit(s) for 1 semester:
Health Insurance=500.00
Non-Resident Tuition Waiver=6,936.00
Resident Tuition Waiver=2,830.00
Amount paid by Student for 1 semester: 312.50
(Fees are from academic year 200-01 – may be subject to change)
